With his minimal but melodic new single, “Chrome NO Heart,” Brooklyn’s Smoove’L continues to energize New York’s post-drill landscape, embracing the trappings of his rising fame while staying true to his gritty roots over a booming beat. The track and its accompanying video mark the artist’s first new music since Boy From Brooklyn, which immediately made waves in his hometown streets and amongst rap’s tastemakers.

“Chrome NO Heart” showcases Smoove’s subtle internal rhymes and knack for strong hooks, resulting in a song that’s as clever as it is catchy and as rapid-fire as it is low key. “I hold my glock real tight /I do not rock Off-White / I am a thief in the night" he raps.

While so many of the borough’s drill stars dialogue with each other’s styles, the 19-year-old MC is intent on creating a new lane that spins the genre wide open. The homespun video for “Chrome No Heart” underscores the way Smoove infuses a spare sound with colorful flair. Laced in sparkling jewelry and moving through thick smoke, the artist gives us a tour of his spot, complete with his crew hanging in the background. Check it out below.
