Sometimes you just have to remind people who you are, no matter what your bank account says. Take the new single “Great” by rapper, DJ, and producer Tyshawn out of Buffalo, NY for example. In this day and age where one’s worth as a person is often equated to the amount of money they have, it takes a lot of confidence to stand by one’s positive view of themself even if they don’t have the racks.
Tyshawn takes that stance and turns it into a fun, speedy lyrical exhibition that is slick, humorous, and sonically multi-faceted. The three minute, 54-second song opens with whistles and drums sounding like that of a marching band. However, before you can fall into one of the routines from 2002’s Drumline starring Nick Cannon, things quickly shift.
As the beat begins, you’re immediately met with energy and a bouncy bass while Tyshawn goes right to work. “Let me take you through the mind of a young nigga dying inside to be rich, Trying to find a way to climb to the top just as easy as I climb inside of your bitch.” The imagery here is both sound and clever and it only continues.
It’s a relatable song, even if one doesn’t share the exact same story as Tyshawn. After all, don’t we all want to be able to lose 100 bands and not even bat an eye? That sounds like a comfortable life. And it’s not all about him either, he lets us know in the bridge that he’s looking to hold down his parents, his future label, and his crew as they ascend to the top.
The repetitive “Mothafucka, I’m great!” in the chorus is the stamp on a convincing message and song. We don’t quite know what’s coming next for the multi-talented artist, but for now this will do and we certainly know that he believes in himself. Take a look in the mirror, remind yourself how dope you are, and then stream “Great” by Tyshawn below for good measure. We are loving ourselves to finish off 2018, and beyond.
