In his second elevator appearance, Sammy Shiblaq never fails to impress his listeners. Incorporating styles from his hometown in Detroit and his current home in San Jose, Sammy Shiblaq is not only bridging the gap from the D to the Bay, but also creating the bridge for the old and new school of hip hop. He has the fast flow and melodic sound of a new school artist, but can also spit bars and tell stories like the rappers from the generation before. Mixing both of these sounds together, you get a true student of the rap game. Sammy Shiblaq’s latest project Between The Lines clearly shows his versatility and story-telling abilities.
One of the most notable songs on the mixtape is “Soul Survivor” ft. Amber Woods. The music video dropped recently, which you can check out on Youtube. “Soul Survivor” is a perfect example of Sammy showcasing 3 different styles of hip hop. His first verse is more melodic, his second verse, more of a classic hip hop flow while lastly; in his third verse, Sammy flows on the beat with a fast and very confident cadence. The theme through all three of these verses is his ability to tell a story regardless of how he displays the style. I keep coming back to the uniqueness of Sammy Shiblaq’s storytelling because not many artists in the game have perfected that.
Moving on, “Soul Survivor” is not the only song where Sammy tells his story. As a matter of fact, throughout the whole tape, Sammy is giving his listeners a glimpse into his life. Specifically, Sammy does a great job with the “To Be Told (Interlude)”, telling the vivid story of his past 3 years and transitioning from Detroit to the Bay. With any song in this tape, Sammy Shiblaq is able to make you feel a type of way. Overall, “Between The Lines” is an extraordinary hip hop project that will be cherished for many years to come.
