Watch Cash Carti talk with the Hot 97 crew about “old heads” & their opinions.

Playboi Carti recently made an appearance on New York’s Hot 97 for an interview with the Ebro In The Morning crew, minus Ebro (thankfully). Interviews are a rarity for the Atlanta-bred rapper, who prefers to stay low key both in real-life and on the interwebs. By granting the privilege to one of NYC’s most iconic radio stations, Carti automatically opened the door for an inevitable conversation regarding “old heads” and the criticism often fired towards his particular style of hip-hop.

When Peter Rosenberg brought up the idea of “traditional hip-hop,” I wanted to punch my fuckin’ computer screen. Every goddamn interview I’ve heard in the past few weeks from a new school artist on mainstream radio has included a conversation regarding a lack of “respect” towards rap pioneers and I’m sick of it. However, as the conversation progressed, it actually shined a positive light on Carti’s evolving style.

Rosenberg even brings up the fact that while Action Bronson was getting heat from old heads for sounding too similar to legendary emcees, Cash Carti is getting equally torn apart for sounding too different. This realization alone makes any argument diminishing the energetic, upbeat trap completely irrelevant. I’m psyched two people from different generations of hip-hop were able to hold such a logical and insightful conversation.
