Drake said something really interesting in his extensive interview with Rap Radar. “A lot of the music that’s coming out now… these kids are singing deep emotional pain. A lot of the guys, there’s so many … [crazy] melodies and pain in [their] voice.”

I’ve had the same thought for some time. In fact, this was the quote that came to mind when I pressed play on Sammy Hosa‘s “Gettin’ Harder.” Released March 12 on O2L Records, there’s plenty of guitar in “Gettin’ Harder.” There’s a deep bass drop. There’s singing in the background before the vocals come in. The first bar? “I’m trying to bless you / Not stress you.”

Later on, Fuck drugs / I need another way / I had to put the weed down / Focus on the gift.” Come on, man. Talk that talk! What’s the most heart-wrenching lyric in Sammy Hosa’s song, you ask? On his heart: “To be honest / You can have it / I don’t think I really need it.” It’s sad when a person gets bent to the point they feel their heart has no purpose anymore. It’s the inflection in the vocal track that seals the deal.

The track Sample-worthy and it builds mutual respect between him and his fans. More, please. Sammy Hosa proved he has excellent songwriting skills on this single. The man’s got some leverage to get more attention as he builds his sparse discography out in music’s friendliest, trendiest city.
