“I’m trying not to hurt nobody but you’re making me believe that it’s kinda hard to breathe now.”

The beat drops out during the hook of duo Our Fire‘s new single “Hard To Breathe” allowing these words to sting. Our Fire tells a story of the struggles they experience with love, over an EDM-infused pop beat. Production was handled by their longtime friend Z3N who was responsible for “Don’t Cry” featuring XXXTentacion off of Lil Wayne‘s Tha Carter V.

The synergy between the duo’s members, Jake Spooner, and Nicole Babin, is as obvious as ever. Though Spooner takes the lead throughout most of the song, Babin’s supporting vocals on the hook find the right pockets and bring alive the emotional context of the track. There is an element of realness to this and beyond the song being heard, it can equally be felt.

The video takes it a step further. It features the two in a room of candles, sitting back-to-back as images of them tightly tied up together continue to flash. A woman furiously slams a picture frame against her head, forcing the glass to crack and fall to her feet. If the song doesn’t indicate how difficult love can be, these elements of the video along with others certainly compensate. It’s the kind of thing you have to just see for yourself.

The eclectic duo burst onto the scene in 2018, after previously pursuing their own solo careers. They collaborated on Spooner’s single “Savage” and then he and Babin came together to make Our Fire, later releasing a self-titled EP. Spooner’s Urban Pop background and Babin’s multi-instrumental talents in Alternative and Country make them a unique combination and sound. They’ve worked with the likes of Gucci Mane, Jewel, and Better Than Ezra.
