The East Coast duo of Olivia might get grouped into the “emo rap” side of Soundcloud, but their debut album Poster Boy paints them in a deeper, more emotive, light. The self-produced album cuts deeper than most music you might find of the same sound, with lyrics drenched in allegory painting visual pictures of their desolate outlooks. Poster Boy shows that Olivia is not only capable of cranking out high-quality singles, but can also tap into a greater source of artistry and create a cohesive and personal album.
The production on the album shows the balance between twinkling piano chords and sparse 808’s, with the remainder of the sonic space taken up with atmospheric guitar lines, leaving plenty of room for Olivia’s lead vocalist to find space for his own melodic takes. So, yes, the music has that “emo” feel, but Poster Boy is a definite step up in taste from what one might normally find on this side of Soundcloud.
