A new Banksy work showed up yesterday. The new piece depicts a couple in an embrace while gazing into their phones over each others shoulder. I have been really noticing this phenomenon lately, street goers all on their phones, paying each other no mind, totally disconnected with the present. It’s becoming an epidemic in society, to remove oneself from the present via technology. With constant bombardment of media directly too our palms, people are constantly involved with things that DO NOT MATTER; other peoples lives, pictures of beautiful women, beautiful places, other people’s dinners. These things do not (or should not) matter to YOU because they are not happening to YOU. Technology is not evil, it’s great for discovering new things, sharing things, but the addiction to its constant stream is alarming. Technology should be used for discovering new things and then experiencing them, not living through it. We could all do with setting our phones down for a bit; observe your surroundings, breath in the air, live a little.
