Nagel313 and Webby are two members of the Melbourne collective Chum Gang, making dreary trap music with a sound that’s exclusive to them. Their new single “Backstreets” is an extension of their comradery, and one of their best yet.
The song features a somber guitar sample backed by hard-hitting 808s and scattered percussion, courtesy of producer Circle Pitt. Both rappers find their melodies over the beat in a druggy, lackadaisical manner in which only amplifies the melancholic vibe. The lyrics allude to Nagel313 and Webby not giving a fuck about what people think about them, and expecting the lowest so they don’t get let down. The atmosphere of the song is very punk, and so is the forward-thinking nature of these young rappers’ music.
