If you’re not familiar with Mick Jenkins yet, then you’re simply doing this whole music discover thing wrong. His deeply introspective and poetic bars are always thought-provoking and his latest performance of “What Am I To Do” is certainly no different.
The Kaytranada produced beat is the perfect jazzy backdrop for Mick and his bars to paint a vivid picture of corruption and misunderstanding in the world through his eyes. The song’s title is in reference to the constant struggle of being black in America.
Jenkins laments “What’s a nigga to do. When you call the police, but the triggers on you” with brutal honesty. Jenkins continues to shed light on the issues most important to him in his music while also crafting some of the best rhyme schemes we’ve heard in some time.
