Memphis rapper Hotel has had a breakout year, following the Elevator exclusive release of his single “Black Mud,” and the Bluff City spitter is keeping the momentum rolling as he unveils his second full length project “Year of Death.”
Hotel is a unique fusion of the “horrorcore”style pioneered by Bluff City moguls, Three Six Mafia with the melodic thumps of more current artists. The horrorcore style proved to be uniquely linked to Memphis, as the gut-wrenching, descriptive verses captioned scenes from the city’s streets, and were so iconic because of their terror evoking nature, and how fitting these were with the daily trials and tribulations the city’s residents saw. Memphis was, and still is, a very gritty place to live, and this style of music is a clear reaction to the rough realities lived by Memphians every day. Hotel gives this a modern spin with trancey melodies and hints of autotune, but keeps things real with raw and intense imagery through his lyrics.
He taps fellow Memphian Sonpacey, Little Rock’s Goon Des Garcons, and Virginia’s Mike Bravo for features, and continues to collaborate with Evil, who appears to be his go-to producer. “Year of Death” shows a tremendous deal of improvement and maturation both lyrically, and content wise since his 2017 EP “Have You Ever Tasted Hell Fire?”
Hotel has all the potential to be the biggest thing out of the Memphis underground since Xavier Wulf and Chris Travis. Don’t forget his name.
