As if sampling the classic “In The Air Tonight” by Phil Collins wasn’t enough, Meek Mill decided to continue his wave of victorious living with a video for the “Intro” to Championships. There isn’t much happening here visually, which brings alive the true meaning of this entire experience. He’s right where he needs to be with who he needs to be with.
Flanked by Casanova and others in his circle, the 31-year-old delivers his bars with a straight face as the beat continues to develop and increase in intensity. Flashes of a young boy sitting in all black hint at the inclusion of Meek’s perception of himself in the past, leading up to the child running into the darkness holding several black balloons. Out of the darkness comes the rapper and reform pusher we see now.
There’s a beautiful woman throwing it in a circle, because after all it is a Meek song and video. However the majority is his crew standing guard while he reminds us where he’s come from and his outlook on music, money, and women today after his ordeal in jail. Meek is happy to have made it out of his unfortunate circumstances, and this intro is him transparently telling us that story.
Championships has been quite a wave for Meek. The entire rap game has rallied around him. Billionaires like New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin are backing him as he pushes for prison reform, and even CNN brought the Dreamchaser on air to talk about everything he’s doing. It was a well put together album, but the moment and impact is pushing things far beyond music. Remember though, he is not an activist. He’s just doing what God put on his lap right now.
After the year 2018 has been, we all needed a championship celebration like the one Meek has provided. Check out the “Intro” video and stream Championships on all platforms.
