Kevin Hackett is a Vancouver, British Columbia native with a firm hold on genre-bending rap. His latest, “NOSEBLEEDS” is a commanding, inspiring record with traces of American influence swiftly falling from the tip of his tongue with each bar. He’s more than capable, and his lyrics are more polished than many of his modern rap contemporaries. The song’s most interesting avenue, however, is the music video, something that you’ll never forget once seen.
“NOSEBLEEDS” avoids many of the current contemporary rap cliches: excessive graphics, shock value for the sake of a good shock, and copious amounts of drugs lining shots. Directed by Jon Cole and Hackett himself, the song’s visual is all about finding the right shot. With almost a Stanley Kubrick level of attention to detail, Cole and Hackett paint a bleak picture about the pursuit of dreams and the plethora of feelings that come with it. They give you everything you could ask for, then more.
