My queen Kehlani finally dropped her appropriately-titled mixtape, While We Wait. Released during the final few weeks of her pregnancy, this nine-track project is intended to hold us over until her album arrives later this year.
While We Wait is the singer’s first full-length project since her 2017 debut album, SweetSexySavage. (That album got me through some shit and I also had the pleasure of attending that tour so it’s only right that I cover this).
The Oakland native first teased the mixtape in an interview with Zane Lowe last month. She then cryptically tweeted, “mixtape lani da best lani…” followed by an hourglass emoji.
The young artist dropped three singles ahead of While We Wait: “Nights Like This” (feat. Ty Dolla $ign), “Butterfly,” and “Nunya” (feat. DOM KENNEDY). The first and third have accompanying videos she filmed while pregnant.
Despite being with child, she clearly hasn’t let that stop her from feeding her fans too. In December, the mom-to-be launched her Beats1 podcast, Sunday Gems, which airs on select Sundays. Hosted with her best friend, Reyna Biddy, the two have discussed topics like depression, womanhood, and love – something I have found helpful.
I love Kehlani because she is genuinely open and personable with her fans. Since her big announcement, she has kept us all updated on Twitter about her pregnancy life and her creative process. She even shared photos from her baby shower. I think my invitation got lost in the mail, but it’s cool.
While We Wait gently reveals Kehlani’s different attitudes towards love. In one song, she wants space. In the next, she’s catching feelings. Peep the project to find out the rest.
