Rising Nigerian-born, U.K.-based singer-songwriter Jacob Banks returns with a breathtaking new single “Stranger,” out today on Interscope Records and accompanied by an equally captivating video. Banks’ second solo release of 2020 is introspective and heartfelt—he grapples with the feelings of growing distant from a loved one, and the search for healing that follows.
“Stranger,” which Banks co-produced with longtime collaborator Sillkey, fuses soulful R&B with progressive electronic synths, constantly building until the instrumental erupts into strings and keys. Banks cuts through the chilling production with his warm, distinctive baritone, voice full of pain: “Stranger, once upon a time we were the chorus.” The song’s video, directed by Banks, echoes that battle between intimacy and separation by placing Banks and his female co-star in various scenes, straining for contact. The vivid clip leaves the viewer wanting more.
