This is a heater.
Gearing up to release his second studio album DiCaprio 2, J.I.D tapped Dreamville Records labelmate J. Cole for his new track “Off Deez.” Produced by ChaseTheMoney, the message here is simple-get off their dicks. They don’t have much to say, they’re super talented, and anyone can get it.
While the track may be right at home for Atlanta native J.I.D, Cole steps out into a territory he doesn’t enter too often rapping over a trap beat of this nature. He toes the line between his cool, calm, and collected flow and speeds things up with a more aggressive edge.
The track speaks to the versatility of Dreamville as a whole but also displays Cole’s recent openness to leave his personal rap world to rap over a beat like this. He recently collaborated with Moneybagg Yo for “Say Na” on his recent album RESET and had KOD’s title track as well as “Motiv8” where he flexed what he can do on these sounds. As questions arose about Cole’s music and it being one-dimensional, he used part of his success in 2018 to remind people he can rap over whatever is thrown his way.
Even more so than Cole himself and the overall label, this collaboration shows how much he believes in and is invested in the 28-year-old and his music. Dreamville doesn’t sign just anyone, and often we see artists signing other artists but not as much success coming from the business venture as was thought going into it. Cole is farming his talent over at Dreamville, actively taking part in their development and jumping on tracks with them to further elevate their talent and status. J.I.D recently released songs “151 Rum” and “Working Out” but this might just make the most noise yet leading up to DiCaprio 2.
