Previously noted as “lush & warm” sonically, it wasn’t until listening to the February release of the Adojio EP that I began to realize that Oakland-bred artist & producer, Elujay, was onto something. His music delivers a very honest sonic reflection of who and what he embodies as an artist. With “Starchild” and “Leisure” being my two top picks, it’s easy to hear the inspiration of D’Angelo & Musiq Soulchild in his approach. The multi-talented identity behind the gentle and melodic tones that make up his music gives this sense of “new age” understanding when it comes to the soulful elements his sound expresses. With his 7-track Adojio EP acting as a follow-up to his previous introductory project titled Jentrify, this is the first we are hearing from Elujay as of recently.
Released under Oakland based indie label, ONETIME, the two-track package holds the same dreamy, lullaby-like soundscapes we’ve been used to, while also highlighting the degree to which he has expanded upon this sound. “Black Tee” is a song of observation, speaking of the struggles he faces over lukewarm guitar chords, while “Tings Come N Go” takes on more of a jazzy angle of perspective – saxophone, drums & guitar crooning over lyrics of acceptance & embrace. His vernacular remains firmly in transparency over his experiences and feelings, which saturates each listening experience with much passion & vulnerability.
