Rae Sremmurd‘s highly anticipated sophomore album SremmLife2 was released early this morning. ELEVATOR caught up with the graphic artist Irwan Awalludin to get an exclusive look at the process behind designing Rae Sremmurd’s new album #SremmLife2, and their upcoming tour with Lil Yachty.

What initially got you into art, and how did it become your career?
I got into art because I loved cartoons and wanted to be able to draw the characters I loved. The goal was always to make a living doing something I can enjoy – I started drawing as a kid and just didn’t stop.

In specifically working on SremmLife 2, how did you mesh your creativity with the superstar personalities of Rae Sremmurd? How did you capture their essence as artists?
In regards to capturing their essence, it wasn’t too difficult. I just had to make sure the pieces I made matched their energy levels. With the branding, the goal was to produce something that communicated the vibrant and dynamic tone of their work.

In a time where branding is so important for recording artists and art direction has become such an integral part of a lot of artists’ success, what advice can you offer to upcoming visual artists that are looking to build their careers?
Focus on what you’re actually making. make it useful. make stuff that people can enjoy. don’t worry so much about likes and follower counts. if you make good stuff, all those things will come naturally.

As an artist, what do you want to be remembered for?
I want to be remembered as a decent person who did his best; the artist part doesn’t matter if you’re a jerk.
