Canada has held a strong influence in the sound of R&B and hip-hop today. Whether it’s the blockbuster runs of acts like Drake or The Weeknd, or the bubbling rise of acts like 88Glam and Jazz Cartier, The nocturnal sounds of places like Toronto and Ontario continues to hold an important place in the melodic landscape of music today. The latest in Canadian exports is Derin Falana, and his new single “U Again” foreshadows a bright future for the emcee.

“U Again” is a spacious, atmospheric cut that puts Falana’s bars in the front line. The beat is almost on an off-tempo with Falana detailing the events of a complicated relationship. The production, courtesy of Joey Castellani, finds a space between the melancholic R&B and dancehall inspired sounds that the city is known for, but Falana’s focused, confident flows would feel at home in any era of hip-hop; witty, catchy, and lyrical.

Listen to “U Again” below.
