The music industry was so butt hurt by MTV they needed to butt fuck Napster.

On The Joe Rogan Podcast the other week, Joe and Billy Corgan got into some pretty deep discussion about the music industry in which Billy interestingly brought up 2 MAJOR mistakes it made with emerging platforms in the 90’s. Those 2 platforms being, as you may have guessed, MTV and… Napster. MTV, launched on August 1, 1981, prominently aired music videos and music content, content which it primarily receieved freely from major record labels to promote album sales. Failing to recognize the lucrative opportunity to pair advertising alongside visual music content, the industry shot themselves in the foot, and essentially became butt hurt. When Napster arrived on June 1, 1999, intent on not making the same mistakes they made with MTV, the music industry set out to destroy the digital file sharing service. It was a decision that backfired just as much their partnerships with MTV. Check out the clip below, I queued this up for you guys but the whole video is pretty interesting. You can see the full interview with Billy Corgan here.

As a side note, it must be noted that MTV is now in partnership with WMG as Viacom Media Networks, with Warner also now having a deal to license content through vevo alongside Sony and Universal, “The Big Three”. Eventually the big guys will own a peice of the music.
